The Passion-Flower Hotel Review

The Passion-Flower Hotel
Average Reviews:

This is an amusing look at adolescent sexuality from an age before birth control, the Sexual Revolution, and AIDS.
In this 1962 satire a group of five girls at a British boarding school decide to do something about their sexual inexperience. One of the girls, having read a sociological study of prostitution, suggests to the others that a more structured approach is needed. So they start a business of satisfying the needs of the students at the boys school down the road. They call themselves The Syndicate, and their business they name The Passion Flower Hotel. Their mottos are: "The Syndicate Will Meet Your Needs," and "Actions Speak Louder Than Words." They develop a list of charges based on three categories of services: Vision Only, Touch, and Nothing Barred. Business is thriving until the school starts to get wind of their activities. Will they "go all the way?" Will they get caught?
Rosalind Erskine was actually Roger Erskine Longrigg, an author who wrote novels under other pseuonyms as well as his own name. S/he wrote a sequel entitled Passion Flowers In Italy and died in 2000. In 1965 this book was made into a London musical. In 1978 it was made into a movie in Germany starring Natassja Kinski entitled Leidenschaftliche Blumchen.

I am a native of Portland. This book provides great photographs and a historical perspective of an important landmark hotel. I did find a few errors in the section on famous guests that have stayed at the hotel. The book says Elvis Presley did not return to Portland after his 1957 performance at Civic Stadium, when he stayed at the hotel, but Elvis returned to Portland three more times: November 11, 1970, April 27, 1973 and November 26, 1976 and he performed at the Memorial Coliseum each time. Also, Heartbreak Hotel and Hound Dog were hits in 1956, not 1955 as the book infers.

I don't know what this book is supposed to be but I'll tell you what it's not.
As a young man I did everything in a Hot Shoppes from Asst. Mgr to bus boy. I can't understand why they closed. Excellent food at reasonable prices in a family atmosphere never goes out of style. The reveiw of this book said it had authentic Hot Shoppes recipes but they arn't the recipes I remember. Let's start off with the omission of "Pappy Parker's Smokey Mountain Fried Chicken" which is what I bought the book for in the first place. In 60 years, nobody included that recipe?
The rest are pretty much generic recipes that you could get out of any cookbook & are in the cookbooks I already have
Big Disappointment

Hotel Planning and Design Review

Hotel Planning and Design

This is a great book for studying the better designs of hotel-
based centers and campuses intended as convention and other
"purpose" destination centers...How a good hotel provides for
its guests, and fits in with the local community is pointed out
for both the hotel-fan and the lodging planner who may wish the
guests/atendees to enjoy essential shopping also...
Whether carefully fitted into a busy city, or spreading out on
available 'resort'-like sites, the hotels described in this book
present a broad variety of inviting places for business and fun.
My interest in the subject was to look for good examples of ho-
tels which could function as both the legislature for emerging
countries--and nice living/office suites onsite! This is great
for a general assembly which wants its members from 'out of
town' to dwell within easy walking distance from the main
meeting hall, their offices, and other necessary in-session
amemities. Good onsite secutiry is possible too and visitors
can look through studio windows while wearing [interpretive]
headsets!
While originally intended for architects and site planners,
this book is a nice briefcase-friendly text for hospitality
fans also!

I bought three copies after reviewing all the Colorado cookbooks I could find while in Colorado and liked this one, hands down, for several reasons: variety of types of recipes, easy recipes and they are typical of the food you find in Colorado and they are great tasting. The book is set up well-organization of recipes is set up to take you through the day and the lay out is well done also. It is also neat to see which restaurants feature which recipes and which I have experienced in person.
The cooks/friends I gave the book to LOVED it and I had to get another book for myself because another friend wanted my copy. I highly recommend this book, you will happy you have it.

I read this book, along with "Casino Operations Management" by Kilby, Fox, and Lucas. Both books were EXTREMELY helpful. They both start by assuming you know nothing about the gaming industry. They then show you the history and the evolution of the industry and then take you under the covers to show you the hows and whys of casino management and its decisions. I would HIGHLY recommend both books to anyone looking to gain insight into this fascinating industry.

The title of the anthology is what initially captured my attention. Although the theme may not be typical of an anthology, the poetry is wonderful. Yet, what I loved the most about this collection is the way each poem reflects a moment whether self-reflective, angry, or lonely clearly and succinctly without any exaggerations. I definitely suggest this book to those who like poetry that is beautiful through its honesty and simplicity.

Journey Along the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad: Pictorial History of Pocono Mountain Boarding Homes, Hotels, Inns & Resorts from the Delaware Water Gap to Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania Review

Journey Along the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad: Pictorial History of Pocono Mountain Boarding Homes, Hotels, Inns and Resorts from the Delaware Water Gap to Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cities were hot and the Pocono Mountains began beckoning the city folk to come to their doorsteps, cool off, have a bit of lemonade and perhaps take a dip in a lake or even take in some fine dining. At the turn of the 19th century the boarding homes, hotels, inns, resorts, farmhouses and cottages threw out their welcome mats "for people who needed to escape the cities." For the economically depressed Pocono places of lodging and for the city folks anxious for a vacation it was a win-win situation. All aboard! The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad was more than happy to accommodate the hordes!
The reader's journey begins at the Delaware Water Gap, often noted as "The Gateway to the Poconos." There were eight stops along the Lackawanna route and where one chose to stop would only be conjecture. Perhaps it was an advertisement, word of mouth or even the appeal of a postcard received from a friend. The remaining stops were East Stroudsberg, Analomink (Spragueville), Henryville (Oakland), Mount Pocono, Pocono Summit and Tobyhanna (Naglesville, Tobyhanna Mills). In the last of the 1800s people began to flock to the area in droves and the tourist industry began to flourish. Another little known industry prior to 1898 began to flourish as well. It was the postcard.
The accommodations scattered along these routes were viewed and photographed through the now unknown eyes of a postcard photographer. The astonishing postcard compilation in this book documents the social history of the times via the Golden Age of Postcards to the present day Photochrome. There is a smattering of photographs courtesy of local historical societies, newspaper advertisements and assorted ephemera. Each is accompanied by a short vignette of known information, or in some cases, some very telling and sorry societal prejudice. For example, the Van Horn Inn at Shawnee, advertised "fresh vegetables, excellent spring water in every room and Gentiles only." Most places did not say, but the implication was quite clear . . .
Some were not welcome, but those who were arriving at the stations were carried at first by "horse drawn carriages" and later by automobile. The Montanesca checked references "for all new vacationers." The Spruce Cabin Inn in Canadensis was the first "to serve liquor," and The Farm on the Hill was the first inn that "welcomed honeymoon couples." Unfortunately many of these places were destroyed by fire, demolished to make way for modern day buildings or converted to private homes or apartments. The memories of many of these places now lie in the mind's eye of the few who remember them and in books and postcards. As the author so aptly states, "Now Mount Pocono is more a place to live than to play."
This is an astounding compilation of postal history of a bygone era. This book fills many gaps in the history of the hotel industry as well as that of the railroad industry as both were dependent upon the other. Some of these cards, most likely the linens, were slightly grainy as they are notoriously difficult to reproduce. All have been reproduced in black and white as color would have been financially prohibitive. In the back of the book are additional vignettes, a listing of all the establishments in the book, a bibliography and additional recommended resources.
Quill says: Pick a dream . . . this book will provide them for days on end!

Running a Hotel on the Roof of the World: Five Years in Tibet Review

Running a Hotel on the Roof of the World: Five Years in Tibet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you were to cross National Geographic, Bill Bryson and Fawlty Towers, then I'm sure that this book is what would pop out at the other end.
Covering the author's 7 years working in the most unlikely Holiday Inn in the world - in Lhasa Tibet - this is a real treat. From the rains of dead flies at a banquet to the bizarre Miss Tibet contest in the hotel swimming pool, back to the dead guest who nobody seems to be able to get rid of, and encountering various smells, accidents and infestations on the way, Le Sueur emerges as a Basil Fawlty for the 1990's, tackling each catastrophe with crossed fingers and invention in equal measures. It's genuinely hilarious, and more so because it isn't the product of a comedy writer's brain, but an account of real, if at times surreal, events.
Le Sueur is a very likeable protagonist who not only brings us the humour found in trying to run a top class hotel in a communist coutry cut off from the rest of the world, but also explores the effects of China's rule on Tibet and its people. What prevents the politics of the book becoming staid and stuffy is Le Sueur's naive angle - he sees the Tibetan situation in the same way that any other ordinary person might, with a mixture of fascination and outrage. It's clear he has a great deal of love and respect for Tibetans, and writes in a highly acerbic tone about their relationship with the Chinese. But at the same time, he is not afraid to show his downright frustration with both the Tibetan and Chinese staff in the hotel who it seems, will never understand the basic principles of customer service, or even hygiene.
It's a nice balance, and the book works on both the levels Le Sueur is obviously trying to explore. The humour is so abundant it's ticklish, the anecdotes are so interesting, you won't want to put the book down; in short, "Running A Hotel" is a very entertaining read.

Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Review

Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chip Conley has a bold vision - he wants to use his company as an instrument to make the world a better place. Rarely have I heard a businessman state his vision so boldly and this alone deserves a cheer.
Joie de Vivre - a lot of persons will learn to pronounce this soon! - is a boutique hotel chain and each property is unique. I have stayed at two and I can testify that the servce is outstanding. If ever you find yourself in San Francisco stay at the Miyako in the heart of Japantown. The faux ricepaper screens and artwork will make you feel as if you are in Japan and the deep granite soak tub and private sauna in the suite will round out the feeling.
Chip draws heavily from the work of Abraham Maslow in running his business. Maslow, as any MBA will tell you, is the guy who came up with the notion of the "hierarchy of needs" which postulates that all humans have basic needs for things like food and shelter and, as these are satisfied, higher order needs like belonging and esteem open up. At the top is "self-actualization" which is a need to realize one's full potential. What I did not know till I read this book is that Maslow had spent a lot of time pondering the implications of his theory for business and had actually recorded his thoughts in books many of which are now out of print. I will now scour the Internet for these.
Chip's genius is that he came up with an organized and disciplined method of applying these principles to his operations. The book is basically divided into three parts - one dealing with employees, one with customers and the final one with investors. For each of these, he offers tips on how to meet their lower order needs and then lead the way to them fulfilling their higher order needs and seeing that they are doing so.
He walks his talk. For example, during the double whammy of the dot.com meltdown and the 9/11 induced travel recession the hotel industry in California fell off a cliff. Conley took no salary for more than three years maxing out his credit cards to live and persuaded his senior executives to take 10% pay cuts. In his own words "...you make the right choice and acknowledge that yur lowest-paid employees deserve the greatest support during the most difficult times." What a contrast from the typical approach of firing dozens of the rank and file while preserving top-management perks!
Half of Joie de Vivre's employees clean toilets and make beds, but Chip has them feeling valued and and instituted recognition programs that move them up Maslow's hierarchy. For example, even chambermaids get to stay free for a couple of nights at any of the chain hotel so they can experience the service as a customer. I want to make an important point here and this I got from personal conversations with him. He doesn't just make employess FEEL valued. He DOES value them and looks out for what he can do to make their lives more meaningful. In fact his life's meaning derives from success in doing so. So there are things like sabbaticals for employess and many other perks that you willfind out about when you read the book.
Customers are easy to fit in to the hierarchy. A lot has been written about how to deliver great customer service and Chip does his bit with things like clearly communicating what each of his hotels stands for. He trains all his employees - particularly porters, desk clerks and others who interact with guests - to lookout for ways in which to delight customers. Thus, for example, a guest celebrating a birthday will receive a cake or special gift. Good section with lots of examples from other companies, but nothing stand-out here.
Investors are another story. I have never heard it explicitly mentioned that entrepreneurs should satisfy investors basic need - for return on investment and safety of principal for instance - and then move them higher up the scale as well. But Chip does this in various ways from only selecting investors who are aligned with his own values to drawing them into his vision for what each property is and can be. He describes a process where every consittuency, including investors, provides ideas about how to uniquely position each prospective hotel.
Conley totally disagrees with conventional wisdom that states 1) Money is the primary motivator for employees. He demonstrates that they come alive when you address thier higher order needs. 2) Customers stay loyal when they are satisfied. Satisfied customers are the minimum level to stay in business. You have to continually earn their loyalty by delighting them. and 3) Investors are exclusively focused on financial returns. This is important, but they will cut you a lot of slack if you keep them informed and make them feel as if they are in a cause that they believe in.
So, read this book and become an entrepreneur and do likewise. And please, pretty please with sugar and cream, let me buy some your stock BEFORE you go public.

Hotels and Resorts: Planning and Design (Butterworth Architecture Design and Development Guides) Review

Hotels and Resorts: Planning and Design (Butterworth Architecture Design and Development Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book includes all the technical and financial aspects of hotel design/planning. It is an essential book to have when designing any hotel as it contains all standard neccessities for all situations. It shows technical drawings and some info of many (successful) hotels around today. Including some financial statistics and images of these hotels, which are mainy the large hotel chains but also Low budget hotels. This is the most important info as we can learn the most from successful hotels and see why they are working.
Cons are that it is quite difficult to follow. Not clearly explaining what certain statistics are and it is not in a reader friendly format. The few black/white pictures are not important really... But this does not affect my rating of the book as it is not intended for actual learning, rather more 'knowing' essential technical aspects.
The book isn't what a lot of people see as design, aesthetics and visuals etc. It has nothing to do with interior decorating or contemporary design. Just to let you know if you dont already...
If you are or thinking to be a hotel designer/Architect or are in the hotel business, then this book is perfect. You need it to have a hotel that works.

If, like me, you're fascinated with grand hotels of the past, and especially with those that have managed to survive, you will enjoy Wentworth by the Sea, The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel. Dennis Robinson's book is much more than the history of a hotel; it is the story of New Castle, New Hampshire, from its settlement in the 1600's to modern time. The building, development, and ultimate salvation of the Wentworth has had much to do with this unique island village and its dynamic, fascinating people. The book is artistically done, with more than 250 pictures and drawings from all eras. Well written, it is filled with facts, legend, and lore told in an engaging manner that has its reader beginning at the front cover and following straight through to the end as if reading a novel. A terrific addition to New Hampshire's seacoast history!

When the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Hotel was built in 1873, it joined dozens of other resorts dotting the northern New England landscape. Now 130 years later it remains the one of the few grand hotels in this region. In between 1873 and 2003, the hotel has undergone early success, bankruptcy, resurgence under the guidance of a gilded age tycoon, one month as the social center of a major international peace conference, decades as a prominent family resort and convention center, then near total demolition, and, finally, resurrection as major upscale hotel and spa.The dominant architectural feature in seacoast New Hampshire, the Wentworth was and is more than a building. Author J. Dennis Robinson tells the stories of its of-times flamboyant owners, its loyal employees, and the thousands of guests all of whom have made the Wentworth a New England institution. In this heavily illustrated volume we learn of the Campbell family who built the hotel, of Frank Jones, the Portsmouth multi-millionaire who expanded the facility into the major resort, and of James and Margaret Smith who held the aging building together during parts of five decades while hosting governors, presidents, industrialists and dozens of conventions ranging from visiting firemen to librarians. Then for two decades, until the turn of the twentieth century, the hotel was closed and nearly demolished, until nearly at the last minute, it was saved due to public outcry and renovated as the Marriott Wentworth by the Sea Hotel and Spa.
