I havent read this book myself. I bought it on Amazon and had it shipped to my father so that he would quit calling me to do his Priceline bidding. "You can do it, Dad." "No, I can't. I need a room in Denver Sunday night."
Now he's done his first bid himself without talking to me. He thought the book spoke to him at his level and was easy to understand. He got a $149 room for $60 on his own. The book more than paid for itself with just his first bid!

Great Lodges of the National Parks: Volume Two Review

Great Lodges of the National Parks: Volume Two

I have a number of "coffee table" books containing good photography that enticed me to make the purchase and take them home, only to soon find myself placing the books on a shelf in a closet because, beyond the photography, there was not much there to engage my mind. To my delight, this is not the case with Christine Barnes' latest offering. Here I've found a treasure that has earned its place in my living room where I can discover the who, what, when and how of these great lodges. It presents a fascinating and detailed review of the architectural history of these American cultural assets, and is made all the better by the high quality of the accompanying photographs.

All the Lovely Bad Ones Review

All the Lovely Bad Ones
Average Reviews:

I have two boys. One of them is just about 8. This book is way above his reading level, but the story is wonderful!!
A brief synopsis: two kids - older tweens - go to stay at their grandmother's "haunted" inn. The two kids remind me of Fred and George from Harry Potter; they're just very mischievous. And their mischief wakes the ghosts at the inn.
There are "good" ghosts and "bad" ghosts, and it becomes apparent quickly which is which. There is a good mystery, a great amount of historical ambiance, and a very good personification of evil.
My boys love spooky stories. This one TOTALLY fit the bill. Not gross, not at all, just scary. The plot was so good that it captivated me, the out-loud reader.
I would highly recommend this book to kids in middle school, or, if you don't mind the subject matter, to younger boys. I find stuff like this increases my kids' desire to read as well as their vocab and attention span. But it IS scary, very much so! So, kids who are sensitive should avoid it.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast

As a former Inn owner I found the book extremely informative. I actually purchased the book as a gift for a friend who is opening a Bed N Breakfast. I was very impressed with the wide range of topics covered. Such as buying in bulk, reservation scripts, cancellation policys, when a laundry service makes sense, hiring employees, and the "do you have what it takes to run a B&B test". I could have saved a lot of time and money if this book had been available when I was first starting out.

How to Open a Financially Successful Pizza & Sub Restaurant Review

How to Open a Financially Successful Pizza and Sub Restaurant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great book whether you really want to open a pizzeria or just want to know what goes on behind the counter. I fall into the second category - I'm always interested in how other businesses are run.
The first few chapters will help you understand if owning a pizza restaurant, or indeed any kind of business, makes sense for you. It clearly lays out the skills and talents you need and the first steps to make your business successful.
Read it from cover to cover. Every little detail is in here. What kind of oven should you buy? How should your menu look? Will you offer delivery? How will you evaluate employees? There are even about 70 recipes to get you started.
Most people who go into the pizza business probably won't read this book. Reading it will give you a leg up on the competition. They may have good recipes and a strong work ethic, but they'll struggle with bookkeeping, marketing, and so on. Meanwhile you have the answers from this book, or you know where you get them (from resources listed in the book). It includes a companion CD-ROM that includes all the forms, worksheets, and recipes.

I highly recommend it.

The explosive growth of the pizza and sub shops across the country has been phenomenal. Take a look at these stats: Americans eat approximately 100 acres of pizza each day, or about 350 slices per second. Pizza is a $32+ billion per year industry. Pizza restaurant growth continues to outpace overall restaurant growth. Pizzerias represent 17 percent of all restaurants. Pizza accounts for more that 10 percent of all food service sales. Here is the manual you need to cash in on this highly profitable segment of the food service industry. This new book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the business side of the restaurant. This superb manual should be studied by anyone investigating the opportunities of opening a pizza or sub restaurant. It will arm you with everything you need including sample business forms, leases, and contracts; worksheets and checklists for planning, opening, and running day-to-day operations; sample menus; inventory lists; plans and layouts; and dozens of other valuable, time-saving tools of the trade that no restaurant entrepreneur should be without. While providing detailed instruction and examples, the author leads you through finding a location that will bring success, learn how to draw up a winning business plan (The companion CD-ROM has the actual pizza restaurant business plan that you can use in MS Word), basic cost-control systems, profitable menu planning, successful kitchen management, equipment layout and planning, food safety and HACCP, successful beverage management, legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, pricing formulas, learn how to set up computer systems to save time and money, learn how to hire and keep a qualified professional staff, new IRS tip-reporting requirements, managing and training employees, generate high-profile public relations and publicity, learn low-cost internal marketing ideas, low and no-cost ways to satisfy customers and build sales, and learn how to keep bringing customers back.

This book was a surprise for me - came as a birthday gift, and I realized it was written by the General Manager of a favorite hotel of mine, the Opus in Vancouver. I'd met Daniel Craig during one of my visits to the Opus - so I was curious to read this.
Mr. Craig writes a compelling tale of murder in a modern New York hotel, full of rich, believeable characters. These people become more and more real, as he spins his multi-layered mystery of murder. I had a hard time putting this book down, and found myself reading way into the night. I was sad to finish the story - it is that good. I believe Agatha Christie would like this novel, very much.

Just This Once Review

Just This Once
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a gorgeous cover. MacGregor is a skilled writer who knows her craft, so you won't be distracted by any flaws in character, setting, no holes in plot, everything is nicely done so that the reader can relax and enjoy this novel. If you like lesbian romance novels, and you've read enough of them, you'll be able to compare this author's effort, but if this is your first time with this genre, you certainly won't be disappointed. The story starts slowly and builds at a satisfying pace. Paula works at an upscale hotel in Orlando, and Wynne is a frequent patron. They meet, get to know each other, slowly become friends, each refusing to act on the growing attraction between them. Both Paula and Wynne are dedicated to advancing their careers. Despite the fact that they like each other and have things in common, they are reluctant to allow the relationship to grow beyond the casual. Wynne flies in from Baltimore for a series of business meetings dealing with the merger of her travel company into a much larger corporation. When the merger is complete, her periodic visits to the Orlando hotel will be over. For this and other reasons, both women struggle to keep their friendship casual. There is subplot and tension, as Wynne's family and home life intrude, but when the casual dinner dates increase the sexual tension between them, things begin to heat up. The main characters are fully developed, interesting, and believable. As the attraction between the two increases, so does the tension and interest for the reader. Usually, the lesbian romance ends when the girl finally gets the girl, but real relationships are sometimes much more complicated than that. Adults have obligations and entanglements, and MacGregor provides her characters with realistic problems, some of which may seem unsolvable. Sometimes, we make mistakes that cannot be forgiven or overcome. I've read literally dozens of novels in this genre, and this author handles the requirements and parameters very well, but she also manages to go beyond the requisite elements to offer the reader a little bit more than one would expect. If this is your first encounter with the genre, you'll be thoroughly entertained. If you're a fan of the lesbian romance, you'll find more than you normally get from an author, in clear, crisp writing, solid characterization, attention to detail and plot, and a good, professional, enjoyable, and very entertaining novel.

Wynne Connelly is marketing manager for a major travel organization and her job requires that she attend meetings twice monthly at the company's Orlando headquarters. Paula McKenzie is second-in-command on the night shift at the Weller Regent - an upscale hotel in Orlando. The same upscale hotel that Wynne Connelly stays in whenever she's in Orlando. Paula finds herself intrigued by the twice-monthly guest, who possesses an aura of mystery and elegant beauty. When things grow hectic one night at the front desk, Paula emerges to lend a hand - just in time to greet Wynne at check-in. Their exchange borders on mild flirtation and both women come away feeling sparks. Soon they begin spending time together and share more than just a kiss. And while Paula is elated at the prospect of the budding romance, Wynne is alarmed at her loss of self-control. Ever mindful of the obligations back home that she must honor, she struggles to resist Paula's fascination and allure...
