Michelin the Red Guide France 2001 Review

The London reviewer is right. Michelin's guides have acquired such authority over the years that you might say that while others offer just opinions, the Michelin is fact. Those coming to Michelin for the first time will have to learn the symbols and codes: unlike most restaurant guides, written as a series of "restaurant reviews", Michelin has almost no descriptive text at all (the little there is was a novelty introduced only 100 years after the first edition) so its rating is all the more lapidary. No qualms here about being judgmental! As a result, you may want to carry other hotel and restaurant guides with you when visiting France, but you will always, always rely on the Michelin to tell you the truth about levels of comfort and the quality of cooking. And only the Michelin offers such comprehensive coverage. If there's somewhere decent to eat in the remotest corner of Brittany or the Correze, Michelin will know. Conversely, if a town has neither hotel nor restaurant in the guide, you just don't go there, it's a simple as that. By the way, when driving around France, use Michelin road maps. Any city, town or village with a place in the guide is underlined in red, so wherever you are, when you start to feel hungry, you know where to go!
One reservation as regards the London review: Michelin is not as reliable on restaurants in other countries, where you should always compare with a local guide; but you can still use it to double-check hotel standards before booking.
By the way, all the ratings are on Michelin's web site - but you'll still need the book of course when travelling around.

There are thousands of restaurants in Paris. They're everywhere, and sometimes the really good ones are hidden down a tiny side street. Choosing one out of the multitude is a daunting task--one made tractable by this guide.
We found all of the reviews to be extremely accurate. They rate not only the food, but also the atmosphere of the several hundred restaurants in the book, so choosing one that fits you is very easy. We also used it as a map book--they were the best maps of Paris that we encountered on our trip.
Note that it's not just the starred restaurants that make it into this book--we found a wonderful little Basque place that was extremely informal and welcoming, and the polar opposite of haute cuisine.
We will be buying the appropriate Michelin guide for all of our future trips.
If you enjoy food, you need to buy this book.

We used this guide while on a recent trip to Var, and found its recommendations spot-on. Most guides really are not written by foodies, this one is, while also including reviews of hotels that are in general less touristy, more french. This guide is what a Parisian would read while on a trip to the South. Get it.

This "Petit Pudlo” is a guide to the best hotels, restaurants, cafés, and food shops in more than 100 cities, towns, and villages in the beautiful French provinces of Provence and the Côte d’Azur. The region of Provence—Alps—Côte d’Azur is known for celebrating the simple sensuous pleasures of life. Ideally situated between the Mediterranean coastline and the Alps, the sunny, bright region offers quaint hilltop cities and lively towns, medieval fortresses and Roman ruins, and fields of flowers and lavender made famous by painters. Visitors can choose between the livelier towns of Nice and Cannes, home of the famous film festival, and the calmer more discreet villages of Beaulieu, Menton, Cap-Ferrat, or Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. Monaco provides its guests with fashionable elegant surroundings in an international atmosphere. Gilles Pudlowski’s guide profiles hundreds of hotels, restaurants serving bouillabaisse and other regional dishes, and the region’s famous rosés and red wines. Dozens of cafés, bars, and gourmet shops are also listed, town by town.

If you are spending more than a few days in London to "see the sights", then you must have this book. All other tour guides to London are superficial in their coverage of the major museums and tourist sights. This book offers the details the others lack, with well written descriptions of the collections of the major museums including their highlights. The strength of this book is when you want to know more about a particular museum or sight than where it is and when it is open; it is actually most useful when you are in the particular sight. This book does NOT cover hotels, restaurants, etc.; for that information, try any of the other guide books on the market.

Although written in FRENCH, there is an adequate glossary in English in the back. However, if you're driving and want to find a particular restaurant/hotel in a town or city, the maps are outstanding in detail and helpfulness. Has saved many minutes/hours of trying to find a location in a town with narrow, unidentified streets.

Zagats has become useless lately since it is based on people entering their ratings on the Internet.
If I'm to beleive the Zagats reviews, then Olive Garden is the best Italian with 'true Italian cusine' and Panera is the best place to go for salads.
I'm very happy that Michelin has decided to rate Chicago restaurants.
Finally a consistant professional review.
I bought one and two more as christmas presents for my friends.

For the first time ever, Chicago has joined the MICHELIN Guide collection, offering objective reviews of 342 restaurants and 39 hotels to travelers and locals alike. The guide was two years in the making--two years of extensive research into Chicago restaurants and hotels by Michelin's team of famously anonymous inspectors, resulting in consistent, reliable recommendations. The guide covers various price and comfort categories and 42 different types of cuisine.Foodies, take note.23 Chicago area restaurants earned one or more stars, awarded strictly for culinary excellence.18 have one star; three reached two stars; and two restaurants attained the three-star level--the highest honor the MICHELIN Guide can bestow.Only 93 restaurants around the world hold three stars today. But the guide is not just about the stars, since starred restaurants represent only 10% of the guide's content.Every restaurant and hotel included in the guide is a recommendation.Budget-conscious diners will find plenty of choices in the guide.46 restaurants were highlighted as Inspector Favorites for Good Value, known as Bib Gourmand restaurants, serving two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for less than $40 (tax and tip not included).Another 109 Chicago restaurants are in the Under $25 category. Those who like to get the day off to a good start will really appreciate the MICHELIN Guide Chicago where inspectors have highlighted their favorite restaurants with standout breakfast preparations.Chicago is the only city where Michelin inspectors have considered breakfast as a meal.Other user-friendly indexes include restaurant listings for types of cuisine, brunch and late dining, as well as starred, Bib Gourmand and Under $25 restaurants.Reviews are grouped by neighborhood for easy, spur-of-the-moment decision-making.For travelers to orient themselves, or for locals to (re)discover their own area, introductions to each neighborhood describe local specialty spots, food-related sights and food & wine events.Time-tested Michelin symbols are used for quick reference, while city and neighborhood maps pinpoint location.
