(More customer reviews)I used to really like the red Michelin guides for places to stay in Europe: to find the best lodging in my price range, preferably out of the way places you just can't find by driving around: like the places indicated with a rocking chair, or the sign for great view , or the bib sign.
I still appreciate the concise info in the red Michelin guide about number of rooms, pricing, directions, times closed, etc. - but this time ( Italia 2006), I am disappointed with the selection of hotels: On my own, via searches on the internet, I am finding quite a few very attractive hotels that are not listed at all in the Michelin. - and with the help of tripadvisor.com, I'm getting an idea about attractivenesss and value of an hotel, comparable to the Michelin star rating.
All in all it makes me think that Michelin is not keeping up with internet search capabilities, but relies more and more on their old and proven places, this year highlighted with a "50" sign, meaning they carried the place in their listings for 50 years..
Also: While the symbols used in the guide are all very well explained in different languages, each red Michelin guide is only printed in the language of the country whose hotels it lists. - so how helpful really are the descriptions of the rooms, the location of the hotel, etc.. - the kind of info that is very valuable for choosing a particular place - when you don't understand Italian, French, or German but picked up the guide for that country?
It is still a good guide - just not the "must have" great guide it used to be, at least not for hotels. For restaurants, I'll continue to rely on their recommendations. The final verdict is still out - but I'm going to rely less on the Red Michelin. This one was probably the last I bought.

(More customer reviews)The London reviewer is right. Michelin's guides have acquired such authority over the years that you might say that while others offer just opinions, the Michelin is fact. Those coming to Michelin for the first time will have to learn the symbols and codes: unlike most restaurant guides, written as a series of "restaurant reviews", Michelin has almost no descriptive text at all (the little there is was a novelty introduced only 100 years after the first edition) so its rating is all the more lapidary. No qualms here about being judgmental! As a result, you may want to carry other hotel and restaurant guides with you when visiting France, but you will always, always rely on the Michelin to tell you the truth about levels of comfort and the quality of cooking. And only the Michelin offers such comprehensive coverage. If there's somewhere decent to eat in the remotest corner of Brittany or the Correze, Michelin will know. Conversely, if a town has neither hotel nor restaurant in the guide, you just don't go there, it's a simple as that. By the way, when driving around France, use Michelin road maps. Any city, town or village with a place in the guide is underlined in red, so wherever you are, when you start to feel hungry, you know where to go!
One reservation as regards the London review: Michelin is not as reliable on restaurants in other countries, where you should always compare with a local guide; but you can still use it to double-check hotel standards before booking.
By the way, all the ratings are on Michelin's web site - but you'll still need the book of course when travelling around.

(More customer reviews)We just returned from Norway and Sweden...traveling on our own with rail passes and a rental car. Oslo,Stockholm and Copenhagen were the major cities on our tour.
We used the guide as a reference for places to stay, restaurants and tour suggestions. The Red Guide has a very high standard and every recommendation we followed worked well. The book is very reliable!
Our only wish is Michelin would publish a Red Guide for all of Scandinavia.

Most guides really are not written by foodies, this one is, while also including reviews of hotels that are in general less touristy, more french. This guide is what a Parisian would read while on a trip to the South. Get it.

I tend to use the Internet for towns in which we know we want to reserve ahead, but when just wandering around, this guide is great!
