I have to give this book a thumbs up. Real world examples. There are terms that are used throughout the book that are emphasized, and not relevanet to the real world. I have five years of Hospitality Marketing/CVB experience; I have been out of the business two years and this is an excellent refresher course.

Having read the book while taking the class from the author, I feel Alastair did a great job of taking a topic that could be dull and lifeless and putting a little fun in it. It's one of the few text books that has applicable use after the class is over. The topics are well researched and presented in a way to keep you going to the next chapter.

I am the guest services/front office manager for the Holiday Inn in Athens, Ga. I was interested when I purchased this book in obtaining information to increase our sales and develop our group and transient markets. I also hoped to in our customer service levels to meet to standards of an increasingly demanding market. This book gave me a tremendous amount of information that allowed me, not only to meet, but exceed my goals concerning market growth, an understanding of customer requirements in an increasing demanding market. The book was very well written and organized in a very easy to understand style, for someone with only limited knowledge of the terms used in the hotel industry. I am very pleased with my purchase of this material and would recommend this material to anyone in the hotel industry that desires success in the field.

How to Run a Great Hotel: Everything You Need to Achieve Excellence in the Hotel Industry Review

How to Run a Great Hotel: Everything You Need to Achieve Excellence in the Hotel Industry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The rear cover of the book states the book is "based on the premise that being good is just not good enough in today's environment." With that as an introduction, the stage is set for a resource that will help today's hotelier find ongoing answers.
The book is segmented into sections, with the first three being: Strategic Planning, Leadership and Staff Engagement. These are focused at the supervisor to mid-career professional and can be useful. The next two sections on Customer Service and Make it Happen are a bit hard to decipher. The intent is to add a more structured approach in daily management practices, but these sections do not flow as smoothly as the earlier sections and need to be read several times to comprehend the author's intent.
I find a certain amount of practical counsel in this text, especially in the TOOLS AND RESOURCE section of the book that provides a range of forms, templates and direction for the new to mid-career professional..
Feedback is always welcome

This book is based on the premise that being good is just not good enough in today's competitive environment. For hotel owners and managers who want to achieve lasting business success through a root and branch review of key processes, How To Run a Great Hotel is a 'must read'.It will serve as a personal business consultant for the hotel professional, probing and testing their thinking across four critical themes which are proven to drive excellence. The content focuses less on day-to-day operations and more on big picture concerns such as strategy development, enhancing leadership skills, engaging employees and attaining customer focus, all of which are central to building a great hotel. Without clear direction in these important areas to guide activities, ongoing daily effort can be counterproductive. It's easy for hoteliers to lose sight of their goals when, engulfed by operational demands, they are often forced to just do rather than to think about what they are doing. This book provides the reader with an opportunity to step back and take a fresh look at their hotel, no matter where it currently lies in its life cycle. The purpose of the book is to get them to question what it is they are doing, why they are doing it and to offer guidance on how they can make it even better. The book is easy to read, practical, and action oriented. It will help the reader to define clear plans with measurable goals for improved personal and business performance.

Wow! I was not expecting this book to be so rich in detail, context, theme and character development. On one level it's just a very descriptive outline of 5 days in the life of a luxury hotel in New Orleans in the early 1960s. Hotel also takes a critical stance in the civil rights issues of the era. Through carefully crafted characters, it comes out pro-desegregation but does it without wielding a heavy hand. Then at the individual characters and vignettes, the book is about karma and how little decissions can add up to either good things happening or extremely bad things happening.
