Soffritto: A Delicious Ligurian Memoir Review

Soffritto: A Delicious Ligurian Memoir

This is wonderful personal history of a Ligurian native who grew up in the restaurant trade and left after falling in love with an Austrailian girl to open an acclaimed restaurant in Sydney. The book is full of personal details and notes on restaurants in the region. In the back there is a largish group of recipes that look excellent. I've eaten some of the foods of the region (my favorite is testaroli with pesto) and think you will enjoy making these recipes. There is also interesting details about the effects of WWII on this region. Recommended!

At once a family saga, a love story, an eating guide, and a travel memoir, this recollection follows Lucio Galletto as he returns to his homeland in search ofhis foundations, hispersonal soffritto. In 1975, Lucio ran away to Australia with a beautiful woman with whom he fell in love at his parents’ restaurant—legendary for the way they cooked the local specialties—in Lunigiana, a city in northern Italy. This narrative traces Lucio on his mission to understand his family, the food, and the culture that prepared him to create the delicious menus in his restaurant, thousands of miles away from his birthplace and family. Full of tales from farmers, fishermen, war heroes, winemakers, waiters, hunters, cooks, cousins, aunts, shepherds, and scholars, this portrait of a journey explores the ingredients that make a life.

Mountain & High Desert Hideaways Review

Mountain and High Desert Hideaways

I was really intrigued by this book after reading about it in the Orlando Sentinel. What you get is descriptions of offbeat homes or inns with stunning photographs. The author includes a ghost town in Colorado that was turned into a dude ranch. Read about Robert Redford's Sundance Resort or house formerly occupied by Georgia O-Keeffe and D.H. Lawrence.
You can't even begin to imagine Kokopelli's Cave B&B with the guesthouse carved into the face of a cliff overlooking a valley.

A hideaway is a place where architecture and landscape, amenities and ambience conspire to delight―the glow of red rocks and adobe at dawn, a horse and rider, a desert sunset, a ski lodge dwarfed by a rugged mountain backdrop, a soaring atrium of Ponderosa pine and stone, a Navajo blanket covering a bed, a fire burning in an adobe kiva…Mountain & High Desert Hideaways highlights the distinctive architecture and lifestyle at the most stunning and spectacular thirty-five resorts, dude ranches, inns, spas, and lodges in the southwest and mountain areas of the United States, Canada, and Mexico―regions where the grandeur of the landscape is the true star of the show, where buildings harmonize with breathtaking vistas to create a profound sense of place. While every retreat shares a deep respect for the environment, there are striking and strong regional and individual features specific to each venue. The book is also a resource for the wonderful array of activities available―hiking, fishing, horseback riding, skiing, white-water rafting, mountain biking, swimming, yoga, tennis, and golf―and amenities that each destination offers. With more than two hundred photographs, Mountain & High Desert Hideaways presents an impressive list of treasures small and large, old and new, and is the perfect guide to creating an unforgettable getaway.

Lake Bomoseen- the largest lake entirely within Vermont's borders- once attracted thousands of visitors each year. Its resorts and restaurants welcomed travelers of all stripes, from Walt Disney and Harpo Marx to humble groups of workers and families. Crowds flocked to beaches and picnic areas during the daytime, and headliners like Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong kept the Casino at the lake buzzing late into the night. Donald H. A Taste of Tuscany (Eyewitness Travel Guides) Review

A Taste of Tuscany (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

This guide divides Tuscany into six main areas. Each geographical area is based on the local produce and gastronomic traditions. It seems that if you are visiting Tuscany, one of the main reasons is going to be fore the cuisine. There is a focus on meats, cheese, olives and wine.
Areas Covered: Florence, Arezzo, Casentina, Lunigiana, Garfagnana, Versilia, Pisa, Livorno, Chianti, Siena, Montalcino, Sienese Crete, Maremma and Monte Amiata.
There is a detailed description of the best times to visit, with a special section on the foods grown in various areas.
I would suggest that this is more about food than anything else. There is a "Travelers' Needs" section which tells you where you can sleep before waking the next day to continue your journey into the land of food.
So, if you want to find the best wines, olive oils, cured meats and cheeses, this might be the book you are looking for.

The Indian Menu Planner Review

The Indian Menu Planner
Average Reviews:

Dishes prepared according to these recipes are great. The lay-out of the book is very clever: three fold-out sections, each spiral bound at the top, so you can view three recipes at once (tandoori, curry, and vegetarian).
This book could be better, however. My complaints:
(i) The ingredients are listed in alphabetical order, rather than order of use.
(ii) Measures are presented inconsistently. Sometimes both European (weight) and American (volume) measures are given, but sometimes only the European measures are provided. Americans without a good gram scale will not be able to prepare some of these recipes.
(iii) The photographs do not resemble the dishes prepared according to the recipe. Some license is expected in photographs of food, but these border on fakery.

With 27 years of restaurant experience I know the importance of design to the success of a restaurant. What is often overlooked, however, is that the kitchen and dining spaces have to work together. The authors of Successful Restaurant Design are the first to point out the importance of a holistic approach to restaurant design. Their insights into the design process are a must read for anyone planning a new restaurant or renovating an existing facility. The chapter of interviews offers readers design tips from leading designers and restaurateurs. And the case studies offer a straighforward way of understanding simple solutions to complex issues. This book belongs in the library of every restaurateur and designer interested in keeping up with front and back of the house design.

This is the kind of job i would like to have: travel around the USA writing about posh accomodations. Not bad! I liked this book because it is very clear, with wonderful photographs, and what sounds like honest advice. The only thing i think is missing is an index by price. That would make the book truly perfect! But for someone who is planning a trip to the SW, this is a very valuable reference.

Michelin THE RED GUIDE France 2000 (THE RED GUIDE)

Two years on since my last review, (Michelin THE RED GUIDE 1998), and the guide only gets better. Because the book works on a system of symbols that describe the various facilities available to the motorist, and other tourists in France, it is easy to use with confidence. At the front of the book these sybols are fully explained in both French and English so why do so many people complain about the book being "in French", a star is a star is it not, even if it is une etoile. Having said that, this years improvement is a descrptive passage for many entries and this is in French, but hey, give it a go, it's not that difficult. I have always found that the French are more receptive and more friendly if you try to communicate in French, no matter how poorly, so it's worth the effort. And this book will take a lot of the effort out of deciding where to stay, where to eat and how to get there. One hundered years old and still going strong.

Michelin Red Guide 2004 Italia (Michelin Reg Guide Italia) Review

Michelin Red Guide 2004 Italia (Michelin Reg Guide Italia)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The previous reviewer (who wrote that the Guide is not in English) apparently didn't understand that there is a key in the front of the book and also on a bookmark that explains all of the easily understood symbols with regard to credit cards, parking, elevator, air-conditioning, etc. This is essentially a catalogue of the best hotels and restaurants, along with locator maps. It's terrific. Also, look for the "black car" symbol. If you happen to be staying in a place with the black car symbol, just showing the Michelin Guide (must be for the current year) will get you one free night in the garage. That savings alone will probably be more than the cost of the book. If you feel like splurging, look at the maps in the front for the 1-, 2-, and 3-star restaurants and for the 4- and 5-peak hotels. If you want more modest places, they're listed too.

How refreshing to read a book that is completely out of the ordinary. The characters are painted in living color and sound so absolutely true. Not only is this a very funny book, but also a lesson in living together with other races. It should be read more than once. My only regret: the preachy ending is not needed - the author had made his point clearly over and over again. I hope it becomes a classic.

" Watch You Don't Fall " the second novel by gifted writer Bettina Von Kampen is a joyous discovery for all blessed to read it . The authors unique perspective and penetrating insight make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. Miss Von Kampens creative vision penetrates one to their very soul. The warmth and passion of the characters flow naturally as they seek positive life transformation. The author lights the lamp of wisdom and we are captivated by lead character Theresas journey towards her destiny.
The author with passion and purpose shows us how making empowering choices can transform ones life. The female characters are women of great strength and courage. This is a soul stirring tale of karma and its implications. There is a vibrancy to this novel that makes it a must read for those looking to nourish a literary mind. Miss Von Kampens distinct clear vision makes reading this book a truly rewarding experience.
Watch You Dont Fall is an exploration of peoples quest for meaning in their lives. With brilliance and wit the author shows us the value of life and teaches us to honour our chosen path. The human essence of this tale makes it an immortal song and leaves the reader singing its praises. This is a wise and generous novel that tugs at ones heartstrings while at the same time entertaining and enlightening. The familiarity of the characters makes us take a personal interest in their evolution. We celebrate through laughter and tears the lives of Theresa , Paulie , Perry , Carmen , Walter and many more. Miss Von Kampen should be applauded for creating such interesting and realistic characters.
The words flow effortlessly as the author weaves a tale of destiny. Miss Von Kampens exquisite and exhilarating vision is an engaging and unique expression. Each and every character will touch someones heart. The run down hotel that is one of the main focal points is in fact a nurturing space which embraces the oneness of humanity. While tearful in places this novel is at its core a joyful reflection of life and spirit.
Fascinating and vital Watch You Don't Fall is an impressive second outing by the author. She continues to explore the inner landscapes of the human condition. We are immersed in her creative and artistic imagination. I highly recommend this impressive contribution to the literary world. The waters of hope flow freely throughout this book and the grace and gentleness of the tale makes it a story of the highest and greatest good.
Once again Miss Von Kampen has managed to capture the human spirit and show us that each soul has its own path. The temple of the human heart is stripped naked and what is revealed is a touching and poignant tale of dreams and destinies. I for one applaud the timeless messages that inspire and enlighten throughout this novel.
I look forward to future contributions from Bettina Von Kampen. She has a dazzling and distinctive literary voice and i for one feel blessed to have experienced it!
