Where would we be without Zagat? I don't always agree with their reviews, but it's somewhere to start. After you read the review you can always check out the web site. If anything the reviews are more critical than they need to be. I have never been disappointed.

It was helpful only if you knew where you were going or knew the area quite well. As a tourist it didnt help much if you wanted to find a specific type of food in a specific area. One night ended up wandering 12 blocks just to find a reasonably priced italian place in UES.

The surveyors are 54% women and 46% men.52% are in their 20s and 30s and 48% are 40 and over.No matter the economic climate, New York's appetite for lively dining destinations continues unabated, inspiring ever bolder ventures. For every notable closing, there's another restaurateur waiting in the wings, often joined by an expensive team of architects and designers, and ZAGAT is always there to note the changes.

Queen of Mean, The Review

Queen of Mean, The

This Is America So: No Karma For the Queen
This is the story of....a meanie. The only time she shed a tear was when her (married) son kicked the bucket because of his bad heart while in the sack with another lady. After he croaked she then basically ex-communicated her daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren.
Also according to the story, her personal assistant who was often at her side, was asked to wipe her shoes clean with a rag like a shoe-shine boy, in front of people. She also liked to snap her fingers at people when she wanted things brought to her, or wanted someone to do something for her.
Then there's Mr. Helmsley. Another multi-millionaire with ample business acumen who lacked street smarts and contemporary social skills. (Doh! Where ya been Harry?) Leona set the trap: after their affair had schemingly precipitated to deeper emotional depths over time, the queen told Mr. H that another man had offered to marry her, and she showed him a fake diamond engagement ring he allegedly bought for her. None of this was true. But Harry fell for it. Leona made an ultimatum that it was now or never. All or nothing. She was not going to be the second banana in his life. The queen persuaded Harry to leave his wife of 33 years for her. He soon discovered what he was in for: a clingy nagger.
This is New York. He was a very wealthy man. He could have simply called a guy in Queens or Brooklyn named "Vito," and for about $50,000 her could have had her....but no. He put up with her because he was P-whipped.
Leona is gutsy and to the bone, and nothing ventured means nothing gained in life. But, the queen turned ambition into a sadistic perversion of making people miserable to inflate her ego. There are assertions that this was out of emotional neglect, or lack of emotional support from her mother when she was a child. Leona's mother, it seems favored Leona's older sister. Let's call out Dr. Freud, May, Rogers, Adler, or Phil McGraw.
After she schemed to marry and control Mr. Helmsley, she made all clear that she had the power to hire, buy, intimidate, and fire anyone at will. Before she nabbed Harry, her first major promotion in real-estate sales was a result of a performance on the casting couch with her boss who had the power and ability to promote her within Mr. H's company.
One tid-bit the author noted, was that part of her advertising promotion for one of her major hotels was to have a full deck of cards with 52 different pictures of her on each of them them. When the advertising company returned with the finished sample, previously approved by Leona, she snapped. She wanted the cards bigger, (bigger than regulation cards), and with gold edging. One by one she threw each one on the floor, and then told the advertising representatives, "have you ever played 52-pick-up. Now pick them up."
In her late 70s now, with time running out and Harry six-feet deep, the "queen of mean" recently donated a million dollars to a Christian organization for the "disadvantaged." She claims she did this not to improve her image, but because it was the "right thing to do." You fill in the blanks. The Queen hasn't got her Karma--yet. Her 4 year gig in the pen was heavily reduced.

Suite Scarlett Review

Suite Scarlett
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Welcome to the Hopewell Hotel. We offer clean suites, delicious food (sometimes burnt), free entertainment (that the owners don't know about), and service with a smile.
Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson has family values. Rather, it values family: The Hopewell has been passed down through the Martin family for generations. The current owners are struggling to keep it going, and their children readily pitch in to help. Well, "readily" is relative - no pun intended. There's Spencer, the oldest at nineteen, an actor skilled at comedy and pratfalls; Lola, a recent high school graduate whose rich boyfriend can give her everything she wants - except that which matters most; Scarlett, the Suite's sweet protagonist; and Marlene, the youngest, who has no problem saying what she likes and what she doesn't. On his or her fifteenth birthday, each Martin gets a suite to care for. The book begins with Scarlett turning fifteen, getting assigned the Empire Suite, and finding out just how tight things are getting in the hotel. "We'll get by," her father says. "We always do."
And they do. I really enjoyed the family dynamic in this book. Spencer and Scarlett are close, as are Marlene and Lola. They all get along, but Scarlett's bond with her brother is stronger than that with either of her sisters. Thus, a large part of Scarlett's story also belongs to Spencer. He put a culinary scholarship on hold to pursue his acting, and his parents gave him a year to become a working actor or buckle down for school. With that year almost up, Spencer is anxious for something to come his way that pays him (to make his parents happy) and challenges him (to make him happy), so he's thrilled to when he gets the opportunity to be in a production of Hamlet. Spencer has such a good heart. You'll want him to succeed, and you'll wish he was your older brother too.
Meanwhile, while all of Scarlett's friends are off having summer adventures, Scarlett works at home. The Empire Suite is occupied by an aging actress named Mrs. Amberson who has money to spare and opinions to share. This woman is a true character. You never know what she's going to do next. Instead of bossing her new assistant around with barking commands and snapping fingers, she becomes an odd sort of confidante for the girl, and her eccentric ways become endearing.
Before long, Scarlett finds her summer schedule pretty full. In addition to dealing with Mrs. Amberson's antics and helping out with Spencer's show, she's also crushing on Spencer's scene partner Eric. She tries to re-connect with each of her sisters. Marlene's coddled for a reason - something I won't reveal here - and sophisticated Lola's apparent happiness may be more of an act than her family knows.
Maureen Johnson's sixth novel - and Scholastic debut - is not to be missed. Johnson's trademark wit is here ("Before, liking Eric was like a mirror - it was just a shiny thing, and it only went one way") as is her ability to capture simple truths. There are many truths to be told here about families, first loves, careers, living in New York City, and simply growing up.
It's refreshing to read a story with a well-adjusted leading character who actually acts her age and likes her family. Watching Scarlett takes in everything around her is a real treat. She's content to be in the middle of her family, in the middle of her teen years, but she's also realizing how many wonderful possibilities are out there for her and for the ones she loves. You know that whatever she does now or when she grows up, she'll do it well.
Check into the Hopewell today. I hope - I know - you'll enjoy your stay.

Legends of the Chelsea Hotel: Living with Artists and Outlaws in New York's Rebel Mecca Review

Legends of the Chelsea Hotel: Living with Artists and Outlaws in New York's Rebel Mecca
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good, if somewhat disjointed, memoir of life at the Chelsea Hotel during the last ten years. It is certainly worth buying if you have an interest in the hotel. I stayed there during the 80s, so this is catching up for me. It is also a crime that developers have taken control of the Chelsea and it is now effectively history.
There is misinformation. The author has William Burroughs not only staying at the hotel, but writing Naked Lunch there. It is common knowledge that he wrote the book in Tangier. So, one has to question all the historical information.
But history isn't really the question - it is the vibe of living in the Chelsea, and the author does a good job of describing his experiences. He is not a professional writer, and it shows - the book could have used a good edit (which apparently publishers don't do anymore).
For a good history of the Chelsea in earlier years, read At the Chelsea by Florence Turner (which may be out of print - worth hunting down). Turner is a far better writer, and her memoir shines.
