At The Breakers: A Novel (Kentucky Voices) Review

(More customer reviews)I did enjoy a lot of it. This book was definitely worth the time to read and I found myself picking it up again very easily each time. It's not complex but I don't think it falls into the chick-lit category either. Glad I read it but I don't feel a great need to recommend it to friends.
The main character is a forty-two year old woman who has 4 children, giving birth to the first child when she was 15 years old. That event is the defining moment in the book that sets everything else into motion. Married young to the father and giving birth to a second child, the marriage predictably falls apart and she moves on to other marraiges and other children continually making bad choices and struggling with the enormous task of raising four children on her own with minimal family support and trying to finish her own education. Part of me felt very sympathetic with the character and part of me kept thinking that she was making one bad decision after the next and largely causing her own continuing problems.
While an interesting a quick read, there are some very real problems with the book that keep it from being as good as it could have been.
1) the cast of characters is just too large -- even major characters seemed to be left too two-dimensional
2) there were some very unrealistic situations -- how many parents are going to really send their 14-year-old, pregnant daughter across the country with her equally young husband to live and have a baby with no financial support? They couldn't legally even sign the contract on their apartment, couldn't drive, would even have difficulty getting jobs due to child labor laws but none of this ever is addressed.
3) some events that appear to have deep meaning are never explained. There is an entire sequence where one of the daughters shows up unexpectedly for Christmas and a whole collection of Christmas gifts are retreived from Jo's (the main character) room for her including a painting. The painting mysteriously appears, is described as so significant in her life (even though we have never heard of it before), is given to the daughter who immediately grasps the emotional support being bestowed upon her throught the giving of the gift. After that the painting disappears never to be referenced again. This happens multiple times where things just show up and then the story-line is dropped.
The bottom line on this is that it's good, but not great. As the author continues to develop (and the quality of the editing improves) this author has a lot of potential to write really outstanding books -- this one just isn't quite there yet.

Crazy in Love (Warner Forever) Review

She soon encounters a host of eccentric townspeople, most employed at her inn. While she fights her attraction to sexy bartender Jake and the inevitable questions about whether her family plans to sell the inn, she avoids responsibility and decision making at all costs. Oh and she has to dodge crotchety Aunt Esther's ghost, particularly after moving her collection of kitschy cow creamers. Jake draws her into an investigation of town real estate shark Gordon Chase who wanted the inn so bad he might have killed for it. When Flynn loses her heart to the inn and Jake, will she be able to convince her dad to give her the responsibility she needs to grow up?
Rich has an incredible talent for coming up with funny plots and unleashing her wit and wry observations on readers. Her leads sizzle off the page; Flynn's sister Freya is a hysterical bundle of tension; and Aunt Esther is one funny ghost. I don't think I've laughed quite as hard as I did when Flynn developed a gastro-intestinal disorder while making out with Gordon. It was a funny read from cover to cover. My only criticism is that there was often too much going on and sometimes too much can be... well, ... too much. But with a great catchphrase like CWIL (crazy woman in love), you can't find too much fault with the story! I have yet to read a bad novel penned by Rich - other stand outs include "Maybe Baby" and "The Fortune Quilt."

Caleb + Kate Review

(More customer reviews)"Caleb + Kate" is a young adult romance novel. Though Caleb had a point-of-view role and was portrayed well, this novel will appeal most to female teens. The story switched between Kate and Caleb's point-of-view with both sections clearly marked and written in first person present tense ("I stand" instead of "she stood"). Though I noticed it, the present tense read smoothly and didn't bother me.
On the actual printed cover, Caleb's skin is darker than it looks in the above cover picture. This is good since Caleb is full-blooded Hawaiian and is described as having deeply tanned or brown skin.
The pacing and world-building were very good. The characters were realistic and usually very likable. Caleb's a great character. I was irritated by Kate's selfishness in deliberately doing things that tempted Caleb physically when she knew that they tempted him and that HE wanted to wait until marriage, but it did fit her "if you want it, you can have it" upbringing.
Kate, after seeing affairs and divorces in other families, doubted that there was such a thing as lasting love. I liked that the author brought up this issue. But I was a bit disappointed that Kate's "this is what true love is like" answer started with lust at first sight (on her part) and an "electric" feeling at every touch. The lasting loves I've seen (like my parents and grandparents) started with no excessive attraction or 'spark' at first sight but grew due to similar interests and time spent together. However, it was a nice love story about building trust and overcoming prejudice, and it finished with the idea that staying 'in love' was a decision rather than based solely on feelings.
The teen characters did muse some about their faith--about God and how what's in the Bible and in sermons (like forgiveness) worked out in real life. There was no sex (though a lot of temptation). There was a minor amount of "he cussed" style bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this novel as well-written, clean reading.I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

When she arrives at the Inn to report for duty things, as expected, do not go as planned.
Instead of working as a front desk clerk she ends up on the housecleaning crew. The dorm that the employees stay in is not nearly as nice as she had hoped. And her former friend that she knew from vacationing in the area with her family acts like Liza is a dead bug on the bottom of her shoe.
SO INN LOVE is a cute summer read, although at times predictable and it seems to have an abrupt ending. It's a great book to read while lying in the sun, though!

Psychic Selena James is tricked by her well-meaning mother into spending two weeks with skeptical writer Trent Sanders. Trent does not believe in ghosts and knows Selena James has to be running some kind of con.
Selena has enough problems with her mother's interference now she has two sex-obsessed ghosts to deal with at the haunted Garvey Hotel. Trying to deal with Dixie and Wesley is bad enough but Selena finds herself wildly attracted to Trent.
Trent thinks this will be a breeze. All he has to do is catch Selena pulling a fast one. But though he tries to explain the odd goings on he can't explain this over the top attraction to Selena.
Double Dating With The Dead is a laugh out loud book. The wit and charm of the characters make this book a treat. The chemistry between Selena and Trent is smoking hot and delicious. A Karen Kelley book is a feel good read.

Gable had his affair with Lombard here. Yves Montand with Marilyn Monroe, John Kennedy with a gagglt of girls - during the Presidential campaign. Evelyn Keyes with Mike Todd, pre-Elizabeth Taylor. Howard Hughes kept four bungalows, but allowed the plumbing to be used in only two of them. Ali McGraw fooled around with Steve McQueen, who wasn't her husband. Joanne Woodward with Paul Newman, who was.

Yet he still admires and desires Anne though both are now septuagenarians, but wonders if she will ever move past Remy. When they see one another, their attraction remains strong, but she wonders if he is behind the recent mishaps in order to buy her family hotel. As they fall into a mature love, he wants to help them save their hotel not steal it, but she has doubts about his motives and then there is the issue of their age.
This is a strong entry that accentuates two older people proving love knows no age barrier. The lead couple is a delightful duo struggling with their family, their personal history, their hotel rivalry, and their age as LOVE IS LOVELIER the second time around because you can appreciate the memories past and the dreams of the future.

My Not-So-Terrible Time at the Hippie Hotel Review

(More customer reviews)As a 16 year old, I have begun to find some of the younger fiction tiring and cliche. The heroines are unoriginal, the problems tired. Such was NOT the case with Rosemary Graham's debut young adult novel, My Not-so-Terrible Time at the Hippi Hotel. The author was able to restore my faith in the genre, creating a believable heroine who was facing her problems one step at a time, and becoming a better person because of them. Tracey, the main character, is a dynamic creation who experiences a myriad of emotions that reflect the hormonal and social aspects that play a toll on young women.
Tracey comes to the "Hippi Hotel" suffering from a parental split, a loss of motivation, and an insecurity about her weight and herself. The young woman that emerges has gained some true perspective, which is refreshingly delightful. I'd recommend this book to young and old who like to see someone triumph over personal tragedy, parents who want to show their girls a strong role model, and teenagers who have lost faith in young adult novels- no matter what your age or situation is, you will be able to draw something from this dynamic debut!

Their gender battle hides the attraction each feels for the other as neither wants to explore their lustful thoughts as each assumes it is one sided and fears giving an edge to their adversary.
However, Melanie reconsiders her strategy when she realizes that Robert actually wants her. She decides to try honey instead of vinegar; red hot pepper instead of cold cucumber. However, she wants only a one time fling as she vowed to never have any permanent commitment with a male since her first marriage as a teen was rotten and he has secrets that make him agree. So why do this pair keep wanting more dessert?
Readers will like it hot with this delicious Hotel Marchand contemporary romance. Melanie and Robert are a fiery passionate pair who love preparing mouth watering meals almost as much as they love one another. Fans will enjoy this gender war in the kitchen that is resolved in the bedroom.

Tracy wasn't planning to be a widow at 33 nor a hotel owner. With the sudden death of her husband over 6 months ago, her world fell apart. She is untangling the huge financial mess her husband left. She decides to ready the hotel she inherited for sale.
Her first guest is a mysterious man named Wade Johnson. She doesn't know much about him but is compelled by the sadness she sees in his eyes. Both Wade and Tracy fill a void in each other's life. Their journey through past hurts to a second chance is something to treasure.
Heartbreak Hotel is a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy. Jill Marie Landis an auto buy for me.

Upon coming home, Sophie reflects on summers she spent in Indigo with her Nanan Maude at La Petit Maison but especially one summer with Alain Boudreaux, now the police chief who found her grandma slumped over the kitchen table dead apparently from a stroke.
When Sophie and Alain see one another for the first time in years, both instantly realize the spark remains between them. However, she did not come home to begin a relationship having one failed marriage already. He opposes even a short tryst as he is in the midst of new trouble with his ex wife Casey Jo who years ago accused him and Sophie of adultery; so he wants nothing to cause a scandal that could hurt his son; beside which he distrusts women to stay as Casey Jo cut and ran.
Though the connection to the Hotel Marchand series seems as nebulous as connecting Hussein to Bin Laden, HER SUMMER LOVER is a fun second chance at love romance. The lead pair is a likable duo who had a great summer interlude just after high school but now have a chance for permanency if they can overcome their failed respective relationships. However, the lighthearted romp is owned by the eccentric support cast, especially his zany mother and mother-in-law, who will remind readers of the late 1960s TV show the Mothers-In-Law starring Eve Arden and Kay Ballard. Though fans of HM will be disappointed at the lack of linkage, Marisa Carroll provides a warm Bayou romance.

We loved the hotel, it was the perfect location for us, and great service. After reading this book, we choose five hotels that we were interested in. I am sure that any of the five hotels would have been to our liking. This book made it so easy to decided where we wanted to stay in Paris. It was recomended to us by a friend who had used it for her trip to Paris.

Julie Sullivan had made a new life for herself, putting behind her the problems from her past... or so she thought.
Now in New Orleans, Julie enjoys working as Charlotte Marchand's right-hand woman, assisting in the management of the classy Hotel Marchand. Having put her past life as a model responsible for bringing one of the modeling world's biggest scandals, involving her former agent to light, she is content in her new life. But someone has vengeance in mind for Julie's involvement in said scandal...
Mac Jensen is a private investigator extraordinaire, hired to keep an eye on Julie and protect her from dangers arising from the release of her formal modeling agent from prison. He is undercover as the head of security at Hotel Marchand, and finds more than one problem with which he has to deal. Someone seems set on taking advantage of rumors surrounding the hotel's waning finances, staging little "accidents" all around the hotel. Never mind the fact Mac finds himself undeniably attracted to Julie, and if he's not mistaken, the feelings are mutual. Both mysteries come to a head at the famed First Night celebration, when a blackout puts both Julie's life and the hotel's reputation at great risk.
Time is running out... Can Mac save Julie from imminent danger and get to the bottom of the problems at Hotel Marchand?
In the Dark by Judith Arnold is a compelling beginning to one of Harlequin's latest continuity series. The stage is set for underlying plot lines surrounding the hotel, bound to be carried throughout the entire series. It is evident some mysteries are not yet to be resolved, presumably to be taken through to a climax in the final book in the series. Readers are kept guessing as to just who is harassing and threatening Julie. Though not a twist per se, the actual identity of who is after Julie is a surprise as no hints are given throughout most of the story. We are led to believe the threat is someone else entirely.
Julie is an elegant woman with brains and beauty combining into a very impressive person, especially to Mac. She has overcome much to get where she is today and is very happy with her accomplishments and the life resulting from them. If it feels like maybe something is missing, that's perfectly fine with her, until Mac enters her life, mixing up all her feelings. He epitomizes everything she escaped from, and she's not exactly eager to allow him in to her life. But love always overcomes it all and when she finally gives in to her longing, she is in for quite a surprise. How that all plays out is sure to keep readers charmed by Julie and Mac's story.
In the Dark is a satisfying start to the Hotel Marchand series and I for one intend to read the rest of the series and see how everything finally plays out.

You might ask what that has to do with a review of Kristi Gold's September release, DAMAGE CONTROL - HOTEL MARCHAND. Turns out, the answer is quiet a lot, actually.
Renee Marchand returned to the Big Easy a failure, having left Hollywood in disgrace after Pete Traynor walked out on the movie she staked her career on. Professionally shamed, Renee is also devastated on a personal level, since his disappearance followed a night of passion. She refocuses her life, determined to help save her family's hotel, a beloved landmark.
Trouble begins when Pete Traynor shows up in New Orleans, scouting a movie location. Will Renee be able to put aside her personal feelings for the good of her family? And why has Pete chosen to insinuate himself back in her life after abandoning her in the first place?
Even as the winds of Hurricane Katrina were actually blowing, Kristi was writing about the rebirth of a city dear to her heart. She wrote: ...they proceeded up the street past myriad shops, restaurants and the occasional bar, sure signs that the city had begun to completely recover from Katrina's devastation... Kristi's optimism and love for New Orleans makes me wonder if she had a crystal ball.

(More customer reviews)I was really looking forward to this book after having read the reviews about it. And I have to say that there is an intriguing plot to it but, there is a but... well, to be honest two buts.
My first but: I love character development and I love to get to know my heroines in the course of a tale. And that is where the story lacks. Bitterly. The author just put too many interesting stories, too many fates, to many different personalities with background stories about whom I would have wanted to know more into 231 pages. And I found that absolutely irritating.
Let's see: There is a woman who is abused from her girlfriend and tries to get out of this relationship. She falls in love with a woman who owns a hotel and who is not sure if it is the right time for a relationship for her. There is yet another woman, an old lady, that lives in the hotel and you just know that there is a secret around her. There is another woman who feels that she can't do relationships because of something that has happened in her past. There is another woman, the best friend of the hotel owner and the one feeling unable to do relationships that runs around in this story as well. And there is a teenager, run away from home, which meets the old lady mentioned before. And these were just the main characters and the main minor parts.
I am sorry, but this is just way too much for me. I have to admit that I begun to loose interest rather soon and was only skimming through the book from page 100 on.
This is a bit of a shame because, like I stated earlier, the plot is intriguing. And I like the way JLee Meyer worked the abuse girlfriend thing... in the beginning. And this is my second but: Because, honestly, how realistic is it that a woman coming right out of an abusive relationship is turning into some kind of sex maniac with another woman she just met recently. Does that sound healthy to you? Sorry, I really had a problem with that one.
All in all I give three stars to this book because of the interesting idea.

"The Hotel Riviera", an aging eight room villa, sits nestled on a sandy beach near Saint Tropez. Its proprietor and chef, Lola Laforet, quietly caters to the needs of her small but adoring group of guests while her personal life unravels. Her husband, Patrick, has gone missing and the police suspect her of offing him. Several unscrupulous people have approached her claiming to be owed large sums from her missing husband and seeking ownership of her beloved Hotel Riviera. Just when she thinks things can be no worse help comes in the form of an enigmatic but handsome drifter and sailor who has dropped anchor in her bay. Jack Farrar seems too good to be true but he is always there when Lola needs him, and along with her assorted guests they tackle the problem of finding Patrick and saving the Hotel Riviera.
Adler skillfully develops her plot and characters, slowly revealing small histories and traits until you find you have grown thoroughly attached and entirely too fond of them. It is almost as if you are leaving friends when the story has ended, but the trip is truly worthwhile.
