This is an okay book that covers food safety. It is your average dull food safety book. However, if you need this book for a ServSafe course you are taking, please read on!
I bought the ServSafe Coursebook (Fifth Edition) in USED condition for the ServSafe course I recently took. At Saddleback, we are required to pass this course before we may take any cooking courses at Saddleback College. I bought the book without an attached scantron inside the book. By the way, most of the used ServSafe books will NOT include a scantron. As it turns out, the book isn't necessarily needed to pass the ServSafe course test and the certificate exam. I bought the book used, thinking that I could easily buy a scantron in the school bookstore for $1 to $2. WOW, was I in for a big surprise! I ended up paying about $60 just for one silly little scantron from the National Restaurant Association. About $20 of that was just for shipping, which is preposterous.
Just so you are fully aware, part of the cost of the new book price is for the ability to take the ServSafe exam; the exam is attached to the inside front of the book. If you don't need or want to take the ServSafe certificate exam, then just go ahead and buy a used book. It should cost you about $25 or so plus shipping from amazon. So by trying to save money, I ended up wasting an extra $10 and got a used book instead of a new book.
My teacher was selling the scantrons she had picked up at culinary school (at no profit) for $50, which was actually a deal since you must pay $60 from the NRA for the right to take the test.
For all you people that like to save money, PLEASE, PLEASE do yourself a favor and just buy the book NEW from amazon (or another book outlet). The new books come with the scantron, and the price you pay comes out much cheaper than buying the book and scantron separately. It is upsetting that amazon doesn't have a warning that states that if you need a scantron for the ServSafe test, you likely will have to order it online from the NRA and it will cost you megabucks. In all the reviews I read, there was no warning like this. I just want to make sure that future students are aware of this before they get dupped like several of us students did.
In some ServSafe courses, you don't actually need the book to pass the ServSafe test. At Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, CA, the instructor, Maura Brondi, gives you all the information you need to pass the course (without the text) in her lectures, handouts, and practice tests in a class that you can take on a Saturday and Sunday at the beginning of the semester. The teacher was great and made the food safety information she was teaching tolerable. She was knowledgeable, informative, and funny. All you have to do is pay attention to pass the course. It's useful to take the exam since many food establishments require its employees to have the ServSafe certificate to work there, and many schools are requiring you to take the course before you can take any of their culinary classes.
I hope you fellow students find this information useful.
Best of luck,Christina Acosta
