(More customer reviews)As a second grade teacher, I see a few books read to tatters year after year. This book is among the absolute favorites in my classroom. Although it has no words, it has thousands of stories unfolding over the pages, getting more silly in each scene. I find this book wonderful for reluctant readers, as they feel successful and start seeing books as cool and fun. I'm going to need more copies to keep up with demand. An original and entertaining book.

Fireman Small - Fire Down Below Review

(More customer reviews)My 3 ½-year-old son loves Fireman Small. He identifies with the fireman's diminutive stature and is entertained by the shenanigans of the silly animals he rescues. We both think Fireman Small Fire Down Below! is the best book ever. The illustrations are deceptively simple. From my son's point-of-view they are easy to understand and lively. I find them witty, complex, and beautifully composed. The singsong rhythm of the text makes it easy for me to read it over and over--as my son demands. Unlike many children's books, this one rewards multiple readings with new surprises. Don't miss the little mouse who turns up in odd places. While this book definitely charms kids, there are also amusing little vignettes that appeal to a grownup sensibility.

Bailey City is full of some pretty weird grown-ups, especially the Hauntly family of the Hauntly Manor Inn. Madame Hauntly cheers the kids on at soccer games, but she also sleeps in the dirt and has long creepy fangs.

Eloise Decorates for Christmas (Ready-to-Read Level 1) Review

(More customer reviews)My daughter read through all the Eloise Level 1 series of readers a month ago, and we revisited them recently because she told me she missed stories about Eloise! Well, the actual collection of Eloise stories (not the early readers) are still beyond my five-and-a-half year old's reading ability, but these make for great entertainment and revision!
In "Eloise Decorates for Christmas", Eloise gets a bit carried away when she is inspired to extend her decorating "skills" to the rest of the building she lives in. The story captures Eloise's fun-loving nature and the illustrations enhance the text. Typical of level one readers, this book has slightly more challenging vocabulary, e.g. "delivers", "delivering", "decorators", "decorating", and longer sentence structure. Young children who love Eloise and her adventures will adore this series of early readers.

Million Star Hotel, the delightful sequel to Through a Mud Wall, by Rana Azzoubi, is a charming children's book that explores the ways in which friendship can bridge all differences. Nadia, a young Jordanian girl, is excited to have an American visitor, Joey, a 10-year-old American boy. The children and their parents all go on an exciting camping trip in Wadi Rum, a desert in the South of Jordan, but soon become separated from their parents and lost in an adventure. (More customer reviews)As we all know, Eloise is six and she lives at the Plaza Hotel with her Nanny who says things three times, her dog Weenie, her turtle Skipperdee and two dolls. When I was a child, I adored this book and wanted to be just like Eloise. She does whatever she wants and gets away with it.
As an adult, I feel so sorry for Eloise because her mother only sends for her when it's sunny and otherwise isn't present. What a poor little girl to grow up so alone!
However, this is a tremendously humorous and beautifully illustrated classic that can always make me grin from ear to ear. I looooovve room service too! Oh, and charge it please. Thank you very much.

Hotel For Dogs Review

(More customer reviews)I have a "Weekly Reader BookClub" version that I found at a garage sale about 25 years ago. It has been well-read and much loved over the years.
When I saw the current edition in a bookstore recently, I thought I would replace my worn copy. My reaction to the current edition was, "What have they done to this story?!" I realize the movie's release probably has something to do with the changes. For me, though, the name change from Liz to Andi, and Sadie's name change to Friday, ruins it. I will stick to reading the 1971 edition; I just finished reading it to my sons and they loved it, especially the illustrations by Leonard Shortall. As for how Hollywood butchered this wonderful story when they made it into a movie; well, better not go there except to say I won't waste my time or money! I'll re-read my good old book!
