(More customer reviews)This book is a big hit with visitors and Scottish residents alike. Although the format is unconventional (lists of the best of X, where X ranges from upmarket hotels to spooky graveyards), it can be used to guide the tourist to the best that Scotland can offer. On the other hand, as a 'local', I've found it opened my eyes to places and things I might never have noticed on my own. And the witty commentary prevents the lists becoming too much like, well, lists....
The reviews of places to stay and eat are very accurate - I've had a lot of fun eating out in Edinburgh and elsewhere to check out the recommendations!
Only negative point - I find the map references irritating to interpret - the map section could be formatted and printed more clearly.

It will lead you past everything you need to see plus you can hit 4-5 pubs on the way over 4-8 hours of walking tours and sites. Its much better than CAMRA guides (easier, lighter, take a backpack). CAMRA is more if you want to find X beer. This is to find the most scenic pubs in the most scenic areas on foot. Best for walkers with cameras. Mix in some scenic stuff for the spouses and your set. We did all 6 days on 6 walks - mixed with other stuff and this book was a Godsend. Good job Bob! "I'll be back!" Best money I have every spent.

The Good Hotel Guide 2009: Great Britain and Ireland Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great guide. I have used it for many years, and every place I have stayed has been extraordinary, yet not necessarily extraordinarily expensive. In order for a hotel to get included in this book, enough ordinary travellers have to stay in it, and then like it enough to send a letter to these people. I think they then send out inspectors to make sure it is up to snuff, but anyway, I have been very pleased with every recommendation I have ever used from them! The other great thing is hotels can't pay to get included.
