The Getaway Guide to Agatha Christie's England (Getaway Guides) Review

Charmingly written as if the author is sharing tea with the reader. So whether you actually head to Christie's England or stay in your comfy armchair, this is a nice way to bring literature to life. Actual locations from Christie's stories are pinpointed. Explanations are provided for some aspects of British life that have Americans puzzled. One could really explore London or Harrogate or other Christie places with the assistance of addresses and phone numbers included. Maps provided are okay for the armchair traveller. Towns and villages outside of London are given as much attention as suggestions in the city. I can't wait to ride the Orient Express myself!!

Please be aware that this product is the hardcover book compilation of five of Agatha Christie's great mysteries, not the six audio cassete collection of three different titles mentioned in Amazon's product description in their editorial review. That being said, the book includes some favorites and some lesser known titles, with the five selections being "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd", "The Secret Adversary", "The Boomerang Clue" (aka "Why Didn't They Ask Evans"), "The Moving Finger", and "Death Comes as the End", with cases featuring Hercule Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, Bobby and Frankie, Miss Marple, and a detective-less ancient Egyptian mystery novel. As an out of print (published in 1988 by Randon House) but complete, unabridged selection from the "20th Century Mystery & Espionage Library", it is a worthwhile read for any Christie or mystery fan, and can be had rather cheaply from a variety of Amazon sellers, currently for $0.01 or more for a used edition, or $4.95 for a new one. If you enjoy reading Agatha Christie and do not have these selections, you can't go wrong with this book.

At Bertram's Hotel (Miss Marple) Review

This novel takes place at Bertram's Hotel (hence the title!) but it lacks something that the other Miss Marple novels have: the rural setting! Miss Marple isn't the same in the city, and she barely appears in the novel. I'd stay with THE MIRROR CRACK'D as my all-time Miss Marple favorite.

An old-fashioned London Hotel is not quite as reputable as it makes out! When Miss Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she's looking for at Bertram's Hotel: traditional decor, impeccable service and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer.Yet, not even Miss Marple can foresee the violent chain of events set in motion when an eccentric guest makes his way to the airport on the wrong day!

Hotel Paradise (Emma Graham Mysteries) Review

I must disagree with the reader who skewers this book so dreadfully (regarding a 12 year-old's vocabulary). Perhaps one of the reasons I responded so viscerally to Grimes' book is that I was a 12 year-old exactly like this narrator--bookish and full of Victorian words better written than pronounced. In "Hotel Paradise," Grimes creates a book that completely pulled me in and when it ended, I was saddened because then I had to give up the narrator's world, one I happily entered for a period of hours. I will collect Martha Grimes' books happily now (this was my first one). I most heartily recommend this book to anyone who likes books for the way they are written, and to those who can use their own imaginations when they read--after all, isn't that part of the fun of reading fiction? Grimes is no dime-store novel simpleton. Her words leap off of the page and the phrases in "Hotel Paradise" are almost edible. Buy this book in hardcover and loan it to a friend when you are finished.
