Ghostly Encounters: True Stories of America's Haunted Inns and Hotels Review

Ghostly Encounters: True Stories of America's Haunted Inns and Hotels

Ghostly Encounters by Frances Kermeen is a must read for those interested in the possibility that death is only the begining and that just because you can not see them, does not mean they are not there. The Author takes the reader into her investigations as she explores Americas notorious Haunted Inns and Hotels for herself and the reader can be assured, of her ability to bring us into her investigations as if we were there ourselves but fortunately were not! She seeks out the truth and is not afraid to express her honesty, doubts, and most often fears with the readers in hopes of discovering the truth no matter what. Not since Hans Holzer has anyone made me doubt, that the cold chill i feel at night just might be someone reaching out from beyond the grave. I highly recommend this book and can not wait to read her next one.

Haunted Hotels (Scary Places) Review

Haunted Hotels (Scary Places)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of all the books in the `Scary Places' series that I've read so far, "Haunted Hotels" seems the least gruesome, and the most age-appropriate: a 9 - 12 year-old audience is suggested for this book. The scariest photograph might be the one of silent movie cowboy star, William S. Hart in full make-up, scowling and gettin' the drop on a bad guy. Photographs of the haunted hotels abound. Troy Taylor, President of the American Ghost Society is listed as the consultant for these eleven stories of ghostly gamblers and burning brides.
The book's language is simple and dramatic, and some of the more difficult words such as `bellhop,' `speakeasy,' and `phantom' are defined in a glossary. An adult could probably read through "Haunted Hotels" in less than half-an-hour. The stories within are: "A Gambler with a Grudge" (St. James Hotel, Cimarron, New Mexico); "Who was Kate Morgan?" (Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado, California); "The Gray Ghost" (Queen Mary Floating Hotel, Port of Long Beach, California); "Party on the 13th Floor" (Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables, Florida); "A Hotel or a Hospital?" (Hotel Provincial, New Orleans, Louisiana); "A Fiery Spirit" (Old Bermuda Inn, Staten Island, New York); "A Stranger at the Inn" (Jamaica Inn, Cornwall, England); "The Worst Wedding Day" (The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta, Canada); "The Captain Says Hello" (The Olde Angel Inn, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada); "A Jealous Spirit" (The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow, Shropshire, England); "The Ghost of Room 218" (The Crescent Hotel, Eureka Springs, Arkansas).
A map, bibliography, glossary, index, and an internet site where a reader can learn more about ghostly hotels are provided at the back of this 32-page book.

Goldfield Hotel: But You Can't Leave, Shirley Review

Goldfield Hotel: But You Can't Leave, Shirley

This book was quite informative and interesting to read. Living in Nevada, it is exciting to read the history of places I've visited, and, as this book was written, to read first hand accounts of those who lived in particular historical 'momuments' - as it were.
The book gives you the freedom to believe or not believe in the paranormal. To absorb what you like and disregard the rest, without disappointing the reader that this is just sensationalism.
I found it great reading. I couldn't put it down, to be honest.

History and Mystery of the MENGER Hotel Review

History and Mystery of the MENGER Hotel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No one writes about Texas' ghostly history like Docia Williams. Having visited the Menger, I was delighted to find Docia's fascinating account of the "life and times" of this venerable old hotel. After providing a short history of the Menger family and early construction, Docia jumps right into the personalities that make this 140-year-old hotel so unique. The Menger's guest list has included Ulysses S. Grant, Gen. Sam Houston, Bob Hope, John Wayne, and the list goes on and on. Read about Teddy Roosevelt's 1898 recruitment of the Rough Riders in the Menger Bar (and the ghostly recruitment that frightened a recent Menger employee). Enjoy the account of Captain Richard King, owner of the famed million-acre Texas King Ranch. A resident guest, the 60-year-old rancher died in his suite in 1885; apparently he liked the accomodations, because he still returns now and again for visits.
Of equal interest are the personal recollections of Asst. Gen. Mgr. Ernesto Malacaro who has dealt with some memorable guests in his 20+ years with the hotel. In a brief chapter titled "Specialties of the Past" the author serves up some interesting tidbits about long past dining experiences at the Menger. Mr. Menger raised his own hogs and was very proud of his cured bacon, pork chops, etc. One of his animals weighed over 1,000 pounds and was nearly seven feet long!
The final chapters cover ghostly manifestations including Sallie White (murdered in 1876), the Confederate officer on the patio, the portly apparition of a maitre d' in the Colonial Dining Room, phantom chambermaids, and others. Read about the woman who awoke to find a male ghost grinning at her from the foot of her bed; the woman and her husband moved to a newer section of the hotel after the ghost "got frisky and tried to pull the bedcovers off her."
In addition to the various stories, Docia Williams includes photographs taken of the hotel and its notable guests throughout the years. This book is a Texas treasure trove of historical fact and trivia from the mid-1850's to the present. It will be a valued part of your library.

Who's haunting the Menger Hotel? Possibly some of its former guests: Robert E. Lee, Teddy Roosevelt, Mae West, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne. Founded in 1859, the Menger is renowned for colorful, fascinating, and often intriguing events that have made it a landmark hotel in San Antonio. Replete with photographs and anecdotes, This title will also keep readers on the edge of their seats with its tales of ghostly sightings.
